City Year is an organization that is dedicated to empowering young people with the skills and opportunities to make a positive
difference in the lives of others. Inspired by this dedication, the Goldfish® brand is a proud sponsor and supporter of City
Year in their continuing effort to make the world a better place.
Why a Starfish?
The Starfish Story is an important part of City Year because it is a reminder that each of us has the power to make a difference.
It is a source of inspiration for the young people that participate in City Year and dedicate themselves to improving schools and
communities.

Here are some things you can do to help instill the importance of helping others in your child:
From Dr. Karen Reivich
Creating age-appropriate, safe opportunities for your children to help others is a great way to promote important emotional
skills and to increase a child's well being. When children are given opportunities to connect with someone who needs help —
a neighbor who needs help carrying a package, a friend who needs help fixing a toy, or a classmate who needs help understanding
a math problem - they develop empathy, compassion and self-efficacy. Empathy and compassion are critical for strong relationships
and for helping our children to connect with others in a way that makes the world a better place for all of us. When a child helps
someone, she builds her own self-efficacy because she sees first hand how her behavior positively influences the situation. There
is no better way to develop the belief "I can make a difference" than to see yourself making a difference.
