"The opinions expressed by mothers in this survey are timeless and confirm that optimism is a critical factor in raising happy children," said Simon. "We believe that the Fishful Thinking Web site will provide a convenient way for parents and teachers to connect and access helpful information on optimism. This is one of the ways that Pepperidge Farm is helping to support families in today's challenging environment."
In addition, the Pepperidge Farm Goldfish brand worked with Dr. Reivich and Scholastic, Inc. to create a Fishful Thinking curriculum, an education program that encourages students to identify and practice their strengths, and use them to overcome obstacles and reach their goals. The program includes lesson plans for classroom activities, reproducible 'at–home' activities and an in–class poster. The program meets national standards for grades three and four and was distributed to more than 5,000 schools across the country. Pepperidge Farm will introduce a national print advertising campaign in August to provide information to parents about instilling optimism in children and encouraging them to visit fishfulthinking.com. The ads, developed by Y&R New York, will appear in parent and women's service magazines. The Pepperidge Farm Goldfish survey was conducted by The Gallup Organization by telephone during August and September 2006 among a national sample of 1,001 mothers of school–aged children. For results based on this sample size, one can say with 95% confidence that the error attributable to sampling and other random effects could be plus or minus three percentage points. About Fishful ThinkingSM The Goldfish brand has believed in the power of a little smile for over forty years and is committed to promoting a healthy lifestyle to make a difference in children's lives. Goldfish crackers are made with real ingredients, without artificial preservatives and were the first major cracker brand to eliminate trans fat. Now Goldfish wants to play a part in helping children reach their full potential and become the successes they were born to be. The new Fishful Thinking program offers parents and teachers information about optimism and its importance in childhood development. Optimism is defined as the skill of seeing the positive aspects of a situation — the belief that things can change for the better and that one can control the direction of one's own life. Optimism is a teachable skill that all children can learn and benefit from regardless of their circumstances. The Goldfish brand is committed to spreading the optimism message to children through their parents and teachers to help them meet the challenges of growing up in today's world.
